La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club (LJBTC) is set to replace its traditional 4th of July fireworks display with an exciting drone show, joining the wave of Independence Day celebrations transitioning to a high-tech spectacle. The announcement, made on Instagram, confirmed that the show will commence at around 8:45 p.m. on July 4, featuring no fewer than 100 drones.

This shift comes after four years without fireworks at La Jolla Cove due to COVID-19, financial challenges, and environmental concerns about disrupting the sea lions during pupping season. Bill Kellogg, LJBTC President, said that despite the former tradition of launching fireworks from a barge, crowd control issues made it necessary to discontinue the practice.

He mentioned, “we were getting overrun by people getting argumentative, unruly and out of control.”

While the Cove fireworks persisted for several years thanks to community-supported efforts by George Hauer, a local restaurateur, these too ceased….
