GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Rosa Parks Circle, a popular downtown Grand Rapids park, venue and gathering spot, will not reopen in time for ArtPrize.

City officials say the park will remain closed off due to renovation work through October or November. ArtPrize 2021 returns Sept. 16 and ends Oct. 3.

When the city in May began the $2.8 million project to restore and improve the 20-year-old landmark at 135 Monroe Center St. NW, the initial goal was to have it reopen in time for the return of ArtPrize, which was canceled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

City events staff previously said they expect more than 500,000 people to attend and take part in the multi-day art celebration around the city. Those attendance expectations rival the 520,000-person attendance estimates from the last ArtPrize, in 2017.
