Dronestagram’s contest winner Michael B. Rasmussen just after we announced the results: “Seriously at the moment I really can’t process the fact that I have won the contest yet. Today I got this wonderful email from you that I have won the 3rd Drone Photography Contest, and getting featured on National Geographic is a life long dream of mine. And to top it off, winning a Solo Drone and a print from Zeinberg. But it’s still unfathomable to have won this contest after such a short time photographing with my drone and a great honor to have been chosen for the title.”
“The Emerald is a small patch of pinewood surrounded by mixed forest and a small creek. The Emerald is the very first series of pictures I took with my Phantom 3. That was the very first dedicated photo trip I planned with my drone, after three months of owning it and only having the chance to fly it seven times due to the terrible weather we have in Denmark during the winter months. I had been spending hours on Google maps, in satellite mode, trying to locate interesting patterns and places. I all ready had a pretty good idea about what I should expect when I arrived at the location. To my luck it had snowed all day so that the pine wood really stood out.“
Dronestagram asked Michael B. Rasmussen about his passion for drones
When did your passion for the drones begin? I have been following drone photography since it’s early beginnings. But my passion really kicked off when I got a Phantom 3 from my wife for my birthday last year, about 8 month ago.
What kind of drone do you have for the moment?
I am the jolly owner of a Phantom 3 Professional.
What are your favorite flight areas?
Here in Denmark, my favorite areas are over forests and farmland. I search for patterns and lines created by nature like the creek that surrounds the pine forest in my winning image. But I also look for man made patterns and lines like curvy roads and tracks from agricultural equipment.
What areas of the world would you like to explore with your drone in the future?
What areas of the world would you like to explore with your drone in the future? I cant give you a specific area, but I have been playing with the idea of a trip to Norway in the near future. I have tons of interesting views in the Norwegian mountains in my head.

“I’ve been to a clip shooting a month ago. We wanted to present the traditional Romania in its full beauty. We were travelling by car and suddenly along the road from the distance I’ve spotted the sheep herd. 99% of the time I’m travelling with my drone. Did a quick setup and in under 2 minutes I was ready to fly and launched my inspire 1. The sheep herd had a really unique formation, so I took the shot.“

When did your passion for the drones begin?
Two and a half years ago I’ve bought my first drone a phantom 2 with my father. Since then my hobby became my job and my life. I’m fascinated by the opportunities that drones can offer. Unfortunately my father passed away a year ago. Everytime I fly my drone and take pictures my thoughts are with him. I can say that my photos are made with soul poured into them.
What kind of drone do you have for the moment?
For the moment I own a DJI Inspire 1 equipped with a zenmuse x3 camera. I’m planning to upgrade to x5-x5R.
What are your favorite flight areas?
Nature, wildlife. There’s nothing more beautiful than mother nature!
What areas of the world would you like to explore with your drone in the future?
Next destination, snowy mountains and lakes.
“Winning the 3rd place is really rewarding for me, because I put a lot of passion in all my pictures and I love sharing my work with all the world. When people like my pictures, that’s what gives me the most pleasure. I love what I do and I am happy to know that you have the same opinion. Secondly, I really wish to put drone forward, there is some rules to know but this technic is very interesting and people need to know them.”
“This picture was very difficult to catch because off ascending hot-air and 50Km/h wind. There was also sulfur next to the volcano so I need to have a mask while piloting. The picture was taken after the sunrise, at 5 degrees with authorities autorisations to access next to the most active volcano in the world.“

When did your passion for the drones begin?
My passion start in 2014, I was looking for a different way of making photography and I heard about drone. I spent my pilot’s license and I start to learn all about aerial photography with training and forums and a lot of practice because this domain really interests me.
What kind of drone do you have for the moment?
For the moment I have a DJI Phantom 3 pro and a DJI inspire 1.
What are your favorite flight areas?
My favorite flight areas are « Piton de la Fournaise volcano », I love all waterfalls too. More generally, all places that there are Nature and a good light.
What areas of the world would you like to explore with your drone in the future?
I wish I can explore Iceland volcanoes, New Zealand and Yosemite Park.
